What I Do
Individual therapy, or one on one therapy, is the most common form of treatment in which a client meets with a therapist alone. This is not family therapy or couples therapy. It is private and it is your dedicated time to be honest, open, and candid. You can lay down your armour and know that you are in a safe space, free of judgement.
We can meet weekly, every other week, or even monthly, depending on your needs, for 60 minutes per session.
We use this time to process your thoughts and feelings, work to improve your mental health and well-being, develop new coping skills for your current challenges, work to improve your current relationships, or understand your current patterns.
I will use a variety of techniques that I have been trained in ranging from psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic and existential, and post-modern approaches.
Because the field is always changing and growing, I am continuing to learn and continuing my research to ensure that I am offering the most up-to-date, effective, evidence based interventions and treatment for your concerns.
Primarily, I deal with concerns like identity, relational challenges, grief and loss, trauma, and stress disorders.
Sometimes, we will just sit and talk. Sometimes, we will do an activity. Sometimes, I will assign homework.
Couples therapy is intended to help two people (or, let’s be honest, sometimes more people) improve their relationship. It is a collaborative process, not just between the couple, but also with the therapist. By letting in the therapist, they can help moderate conversations to resolve disputes or even how to conduct conflict, teach partners how to communicate about sensitive issues, and how to understand their partners’ individual needs.
Relationships change over time and couples therapy is not just for new relationships. A relationship that worked beautifully twenty years ago may hit a rough patch as jobs change, as finances change, as children grow older and move out. As partners and relationships grow and change, as life circumstances change, the dynamics and patterns change. And sometimes, friction develops. And this is where I come in. We can work together to understand these changes in the context of each person’s perspective, and then see how they fit back into the fuller picture - almost like pieces of a puzzle.
Sometimes couples therapy may feel like individual therapy because so much of the individual is brought out into the open.
Again, as in individual therapy, a variety of approaches may be used, and homework can be assigned. However, because my client is the relationship, I cannot conduct individual therapy with a single partner in the couple. However, I may recommend that individuals seek private therapy.
